Andrzej Legocki

Andrzej Legocki is a Polish biochemist and plant molecular biologist who has occupied top academic and administrative roles at the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) and the University of Agriculture in Poznań. He served as Director of the PAS Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (1988–2003), President of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2003–2006) and Chairman of its Division of Biological Sciences (from 2007). Simultaneously, he was Full Professor and Head of the Protein Biosynthesis Laboratory at the University of Agriculture, Poznań (1977–1988), where he began his career as an Adjunct in 1965 after obtaining his Ph.D. in Biochemistry.

Research interests span symbiotic nitrogen fixation, plant-bacterium interactions, plant-based recombinant vaccines, plant biotechnology and plant molecular biology. His group has studied the molecular dialogue between legumes and rhizobia, the regulation of ferritin and leghemoglobin genes, and the use of transgenic plants to produce edible vaccines against human and animal pathogens.
