John T. Roberts is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His work focuses on the philosophy of science and metaphysics, particularly the nature of laws of nature, chance, and probabilistic reasoning. He is the author of The Law-Governed Universe (Oxford University Press, 2009), which proposes the 'Measurability Account' of laws. His research integrates Humean and non-Humean perspectives to explain how laws govern the universe while maintaining minimal metaphysical commitments.
Key research areas include: laws of nature (their contingency, counterfactual resilience, and measurability), probabilistic laws, the problem of induction, and Humean supervenience debates. Recent work addresses self-referential laws, vagueness in scientific statements, and von Kries' contributions to probability theory.
Selected publications include influential articles in Philosophical Studies, British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, and Australasian Journal of Philosophy, often collaborating with John Earman. His current projects explore normativist approaches to laws and counterfactuals, as well as unresolved questions in inductive reasoning.
