Professor Alastair Wilson is a faculty member at the University of Leeds, serving as Professor of Philosophy and Director of Postgraduate Research Studies within the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. He holds a DPhil, BPhil, and BA from the University of Oxford, specializing in Philosophy and Physics. His research focuses on metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of science, and philosophy of physics. Notable projects include the ERC-funded FraMEPhys (2018-2023) exploring metaphysical explanation in physics and the book The Nature of Contingency: Quantum Physics as Modal Realism (OUP, 2020). Recent works include Modal Naturalism: Science and the Modal Facts (CUP, 2024) and co-editing Levels of Explanation (OUP, 2024). He has held leadership roles in academic societies, including President of the Society for the Metaphysics of Science (2017-18). His work integrates scientific theories with metaphysical inquiry, emphasizing modal realism and quantum foundations.
Research interests include explanation in physics, laws of nature, chance, counterfactuals, and the epistemology of disagreement. He has contributed to debates on Everettian quantum mechanics, temporal asymmetry, and the metaphysics of modality. Editorial roles include Philosophy of Physics and Ergo. Current research explores theoretical autonomy, modality naturalism, and cosmological fine-tuning.
