John Steele serves as the Jesse H. Choper Lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. A solo practitioner specializing in legal ethics and professional liability, he has taught professional responsibility for over forty semesters across multiple institutions including Stanford Law School, UC-Hastings School of Law (as Adjunct Professor of Law), Indiana University Maurer School of Law (as Visiting Professor), Santa Clara University, and Golden Gate University.
His research centers on Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility with deep specialization in Legal Malpractice, Risk Management, and Conflict of Interest resolution. His scholarly impact is demonstrated by a law review article cited by the Second Circuit in GSI Commerce Solutions v. BabyCenter, LLC (2010), establishing precedent in conflict of interest jurisprudence. He actively addresses contemporary legal challenges including elimination of bias, substance abuse in the profession, and law practice management innovation.
