John Scott is a Senior Research Fellow and Group Leader in the Drug Discovery Biology theme at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS), Monash University. He holds an Honorary Senior Research Fellow position at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health and a Senior Research Associate role at St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research (SVI), reflecting his strong interdisciplinary affiliations in neuroscience, metabolism, and drug discovery.
- Bachelor of Science (Hons), University of Glasgow
- PhD in Biochemistry, University of Dundee (Wellcome Trust Prize Scholar)
Dr Scott’s research focuses on kinase signaling pathways, particularly CaMKK2, which regulates brain function and whole-body energy metabolism. His work has established links between CaMKK2 dysfunction and psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He employs biochemical, cellular, and genetically modified mouse models to investigate these pathways.
His recent research output centers on metabolite-sensing mechanisms, psychiatric disease modeling, and therapeutic target validation. Articles highlight work on AMPK regulation, CaMKK2’s role in mood disorders, and metabolic interventions in obesity and liver disease.
Dr Scott leads major research projects funded by the NHMRC and ARC, including Validating CaMKK2 as a Rational Treatment Target for Bipolar Disorder and Uncovering New Mechanisms of Metabolite-Sensing and Signaling. These projects underscore his leadership in translational neuroscience and metabolism research.
He supervises PhD students and collaborates internationally with academic and industrial partners to develop novel therapeutics targeting CaMKK2. His team utilizes advanced techniques such as protein crystallography, mass spectrometry, and in vivo modeling.
