John Sadler

John Sadler, M.D., is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, holding the Daniel W. Foster, M.D., Professorship in Medical Ethics and the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor. He leads the Program in Ethics in Science & Medicine and chairs the Division of Ethics within the Department of Psychiatry. His work bridges philosophy, ethics, and clinical practice, with a focus on psychiatric diagnosis, medical education, and bioethics.

Dr. Sadler earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed psychiatry training at UT Southwestern, joining its faculty in 1984. He has served on Parkland Hospital’s Institutional Ethics Committee since 1985 and co-chaired it until 2019. He co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Philosophy & Psychiatry and co-edited the journal Philosophy, Psychiatry, & Psychology for three decades.

His research emphasizes conceptual foundations of psychiatry, ethical dilemmas in diagnosis, and medical student education. Notable contributions include books like Values and Psychiatric Diagnosis (2005) and Vice and Psychiatric Diagnosis (2024), as well as co-editing Oxford Handbooks in the field. He has received prestigious awards for teaching and scholarship, including the American Psychiatric Association’s Distinguished Life Fellowship.
