John Punches serves as Associate Professor in Oregon State University's College of Forestry, Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management, and as Extension Forester for Union, Umatilla, and Wallowa Counties in northeastern Oregon. He leads all-lands partnership efforts to restore native forests to resilient conditions and develops professional fire management certification programs funded by the Bureau of Land Management.
His academic credentials include:
- PhD in Forest Ecosystems and Society (Oregon State University, 2017)
- MS in Wood Science and Forest Products (Virginia Tech, 1993)
- BS in Forestry (Michigan Technological University, 1990)
Dr. Punches' research centers on Prescribed Fire and Fire Behavior with critical applications in Forest Management and Silviculture to combat wildfire threats and climate stress. His extension work translates these academic pursuits into actionable strategies for forest restoration, emphasizing community-based fire adaptation and risk reduction through hands-on prescribed burning programs.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on eastern Oregon wildfire preparedness, evolving from county-specific risk reduction guides (Wallowa 2023, Hood River 2024) to quantitative geospatial risk modeling (2022). This trajectory highlights increasing sophistication in integrating community engagement with scientific asset valuation for landscape-scale fire resilience.
As an educator, he mentors graduate students Rachel Howard and Jordon Lindsey while developing OSU's professional fire manager certificate program. His extension activities include teaching FOR252/508 Guard School and FOR452/552 Prescribed Fire Practicum, alongside non-credit courses on forest health monitoring and fire implementation tailored to local needs.
Dr. Punches actively serves as search and rescue volunteer/instructor in his service region, demonstrating deep community integration beyond academic responsibilities.
