Dr. Kerry Metlen is Senior Forest Scientist for The Nature Conservancy in Oregon and Courtesy Faculty at Oregon State University's College of Forestry. He collaborates with partners to provide scientific grounding for forest management decisions through robust monitoring and adaptation strategies. His work spans state and regional scales supporting dry forest initiatives, including leadership in forest adaptation with the Rogue Forest Partners consortium.
Research focuses on fire ecology, restoration treatments, hydrological impacts of forest management, and climate adaptation strategies. Publications demonstrate expertise in evidence-based forest management, particularly through meta-analyses and long-term case studies.
Key research areas include:
- Wildfire severity mitigation through thinning and prescribed fire
- Hydrological consequences of restoration practices
- Historical fire regime reconstruction
- Collaborative governance models for landscape-scale restoration
