John Murnane is an Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, University of Limerick. He specializes in resource recovery, environmental sustainability, and water/wastewater management. With a BE from University College Cork (UCC), an MSc from Heriot-Watt University, and a PhD from NUI Galway, he combines academic leadership with research innovation.
His research focuses on mine leachate remediation, climate change mitigation, and circular economy practices. Key areas include constructed wetlands for heavy metal treatment, agricultural runoff management, and biochar applications. He leads modules in civil engineering, sustainable resource management, and problem-based learning initiatives.
As Principal Investigator on ERA-MIN and EPA-funded projects, he collaborates with industry and academia to advance environmental technologies. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing clean water (SDG6), climate action (SDG13), and sustainable cities (SDG11).
- Education: BE (Civil Eng., UCC), MSc (Heriot-Watt), PhD (NUI Galway)
- Grants: PI/Co-PI on European and national projects
- Teaching: Course Director for BE/MEng Civil Engineering; Academic Leader for Hydrology, Water Management Systems
Recent publications emphasize vanadium removal in wetlands, phosphorus dynamics in agricultural systems, and sustainable waste management technologies. His interdisciplinary approach bridges engineering, environmental science, and policy to address global challenges.
