Tannaz Pak

Tannaz Pak is an Associate Professor (Research) in Energy and Environmental Engineering at Teesside University and holds an honorary Associate Professor title at Heriot-Watt University. Her research focuses on biochar applications, groundwater remediation, nanotechnology, and porous media dynamics. She has been recognized as one of the Top 50 Women in Engineering (2021) and is a Chartered Engineer (CEng FIMMM) and Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA).

Educated at the University of Edinburgh (PhD in Geosciences, 2015), IFP School (MSc in Reservoir Geoscience and Engineering), and an engineering BSc from Iran, her work bridges environmental engineering, materials science, and subsurface fluid dynamics. She leads projects funded by UKRI, British Council, and others, including biochar valorization and nanoremediation initiatives. Tannaz is actively involved in editorial roles for Scientific Reports and InterPore Journal, and collaborates internationally with institutions in China, Nigeria, Brazil, and Italy.

Her research themes include

. She supervises PhD students on topics like biochar applications and nanoparticle mobility in porous media.

Recent projects include the African Agriculture KTP (valorizing cassava waste) and the AMIGO-Biochar initiative (cross-border biochar manufacturing). Her work emphasizes sustainable technologies while evaluating environmental and health impacts, supported by advanced imaging (e.g., X-ray tomography) and computational modeling.

Professional activities include roles on the InterPore UK steering committee and Diamond Light Source’s I12 User Working Group. She teaches at Teesside and has examined MSc courses at Heriot-Watt University.
