Dr. Brian Whitman serves as Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Wilkes University, teaching Water and Waste Treatment, Hydrology, Environmental Hydraulics, and Water Resources Engineering. He co-directs the Ratchford Field Station and participates in the Wilkes University Ash Institute.
His research addresses critical environmental challenges through:
- Constructed wetlands systems for agricultural runoff and abandoned mine drainage remediation
- Repurposing coal power plant waste ash to improve agricultural soil fertility and crop yields
- Phytoremediation techniques using river birch saplings to degrade MTBE contaminants
Dr. Whitman co-authored the authoritative text "Wastewater Collection System Modeling and Design" (Haestad Press), advancing hydraulic modeling applications in infrastructure design. His field station leadership enables applied research in sustainable water management practices.
