Professor John McVey is a Professor of Cardiovascular Biology at the University of Surrey and Head of the Department of Biochemical Sciences. He also holds an Honorary Professorship at University College London (UCL) and has served as a Visiting Professor at King's College London (2011–2013). His research focuses on blood coagulation, hemostasis, and thrombosis, with a particular emphasis on gene therapy for inherited disorders and novel anticoagulant strategies. He has published over 120 articles and secured major grants from leading institutions. His work includes pioneering studies on adenovirus-coagulation factor interactions for gene delivery optimization. McVey is also a founder of Coagulare Biomedica Ltd, offering expertise in bio-manufacturing and haemostasis consultancy.
Research Interests: Development of targeted anticoagulants, gene therapy for hemophilia, genetic studies in coagulation disorders, and adenoviral vector delivery mechanisms. His lab integrates molecular biology, clinical research, and translational medicine.
Awards and Grants: Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, inventor of 3 patents, and recipient of grants from MRC, Wellcome Trust, BBSRC, and BHF. Recent work includes studies on FVIII expression optimization and adenovirus-FX binding pathways.
Advising and Labs: Supervised over 10 PhD/Master’s students, including notable alumni like Amit Nathwani. His Molecular Medicine Group collaborates with institutions like the Thrombosis Research Institute and Imperial College London.
