Dr. Anthony Chan is a Professor of Pediatrics at McMaster University and a pediatric hematologist/oncologist at Hamilton Health Sciences. He holds the McMaster Children’s Hospital/Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation Chair in Pediatric Thrombosis and Hemostasis. As Director of the Pediatric Thrombosis Clinic and Hemophilia Clinic, he specializes in thrombosis management, hemophilia care, and translational research. His work focuses on antithrombin-heparin complexes for anticoagulation and thrombosis prevention in medical devices. He is also a clinical scientist at the Thrombosis & Atherosclerosis Research Institute (TaARI) and David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute (DBCVSRI).
Research Interests: Dr. Chan’s work integrates clinical care with innovation. His lab develops biomaterials to prevent thrombosis on medical devices and investigates novel treatments for pediatric thrombosis and hemophilia. Key areas include antithrombotic drug delivery systems, coagulation pathway modulation, and clinical trials for hemophilia therapies. His research has led to advancements in anticoagulant therapies, including the covalent antithrombin-heparin complex (ATH), which enhances safety and efficacy.
Articles & Trends: His recent studies emphasize pediatric thrombosis epidemiology, hemophilia treatment optimization, and thromboprophylaxis strategies in oncology patients. He has contributed to global guidelines for anticoagulant use in children and explored the role of genetic factors in thrombosis risk. Notably, his work bridges basic science and clinical practice, addressing unmet needs in pediatric hematology.
Awards: Recipient of the Order of Ontario (2017), Canadian Academy of Health Sciences Inductee (2022), and Ann Harrington Award (2023) for contributions to hemophilia care. These honors recognize his clinical leadership and research impact on child health.
Advising & Grants: Dr. Chan leads multinational studies on hemophilia therapies and thrombosis prevention. He collaborates with institutions globally to advance clinical practices and drug development. His grants support translational projects, including biomaterials for anticoagulation and inhibitor management in hemophilia.
Labs & Teams: Affiliated with TaARI and DBCVSRI, he collaborates with multidisciplinary teams in thrombosis research, vascular biology, and clinical hematology. His lab integrates engineering principles with medical research to innovate therapies and diagnostic tools.
