Dr. Jeffrey Weitz is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University, and serves as Executive Director of the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute (TaARI). He holds prestigious academic titles including the Tier I Canada Research Chair in Thrombosis and the Fraser Mustard Chair in Cardiovascular Research. His research focuses on hemostasis, thrombosis, and anticoagulant therapies, with a particular emphasis on developing safer anticoagulants targeting factor XI and improving medical device biocompatibility. Dr. Weitz leads a multidisciplinary team investigating mechanisms of thrombosis, clot formation regulation, and novel therapies to reduce cardiovascular-related mortality.
His work spans translational research, clinical trials, and epidemiological studies, with contributions to understanding polyphosphate's role in coagulation and the development of clot-resistant medical device coatings. TaARI, under his leadership, bridges basic and clinical research to address thrombosis and bleeding disorders. Key achievements include advancements in factor XI inhibition and the design of anti-thrombogenic materials.
- Research Clusters: Health & Bio-innovation
- Key Awards: Tier I Canada Research Chair, Fraser Mustard Chair
- Labs: Weitz Lab (focusing on coagulation mechanisms and anticoagulant development)
Dr. Weitz collaborates with bioengineers to innovate biomaterials and devices, while maintaining clinical relevance through anticoagulant trials like AXIOMATIC-TKR and AZALEA-TIMI 71. His lab's recent studies explore histidine-rich glycoprotein's role in clotting regulation and polyphosphate toxicity mitigation.
