John M. Chaney is a Regents Professor of Psychology at Oklahoma State University (OSU), holding a Clinical Psychologist license with specialty emphasis in Pediatric Psychology. Appointed to Regents Professor status in 2013, he maintains active leadership roles including Director of OSU's Center for American Indian Studies and the "American Indians Into Psychology" program since 1997.
His research demonstrates dual expertise in clinical health psychology and sociocultural studies. Primary investigations examine cognitive determinants of psychological adjustment across adult and pediatric chronic medical illnesses, with significant contributions to Pediatric Psychology methodology. Secondary research pioneers empirical analysis of social cognitive implications from Native American sports mascots—a notably underexplored area where his experimental studies represent rare empirical literature.
Professional recognition includes:
- Fellow of the American Psychological Association
As Director of the "American Indians Into Psychology" program, he has overseen the production of more Native American Ph.D. graduates in Psychology than any U.S. institution, establishing OSU as the national leader in this critical diversity initiative. His concurrent directorship of OSU's Center for American Indian Studies drives interdisciplinary research on Indigenous health and cultural identity.
These programs constitute his primary academic infrastructure, functioning as integrated training and research ecosystems focused on advancing Native American representation in psychological science through cohort-based mentorship and community-engaged scholarship.
