John Chaney, a Professor at Oklahoma State University in the Department of Psychology, serves as a Regents Professor, Director for American Indians Into Psychology, and Director for the Center for American Indian Studies. He is also a Charter Faculty member for the Center for Pediatric Psychology. Dr. Chaney's research focuses on the psychosocial adjustment of youth with chronic illnesses, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and juvenile rheumatic diseases (JRD), emphasizing parent-child cognitive appraisals and stigma-related variables.
His lab has conducted cross-sectional and longitudinal studies to refine conceptual models of adjustment, collaborating with institutions like the OU Health Sciences Center. Current research examines adjustment outcomes in youth with IBD through a resource model of self-regulation, investigating stigma consciousness, concealment, and peer dynamics.
Dr. Chaney has received the Martin P. Levin Mentorship Award (2014) and maintains active research on topics including:
- Depression in youth with chronic conditions
- Parental influence on emotional outcomes
- Illness uncertainty and self-regulation
- Stigma in pediatric health
