John M. Armstrong is a Professor of Philosophy at Southern Virginia University, where he has served in various academic capacities since 1998. He previously held the position of Willis J. Smith Professor of Philosophy (2011-2023) and has been Professor at Southern Virginia University since 2023. His academic career also includes a Visiting Professorship at Washington and Lee University in 2006 and teaching positions during his doctoral studies at the University of Arizona, Brigham Young University, and the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Armstrong earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy with a minor in Classics from the University of Arizona in 1998, following an M.A. in Philosophy from the same institution in 1995. His undergraduate education was completed at Brigham Young University in 1992, where he received a B.A. magna cum laude in Philosophy with University Honors and minors in Greek and Chinese.
His research focuses on ancient philosophy, particularly the works of Plato, Aristotle, and Epicurus. Dr. Armstrong has published articles in leading journals for ancient philosophy and classics, and has produced significant translations including a new translation of Plato's Apology of Socrates. His scholarship uniquely bridges Greek and Chinese philosophical traditions, reflecting his academic background in both areas. His teaching portfolio spans core courses like Reason and the Self and Advanced Composition, major courses in Ethics, Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, Ancient Psychology, Chinese Philosophy, Free Will, and Political Philosophy, as well as travel study programs to Greece, Rome, and China.

Dr. Armstrong has held significant leadership roles including Director of the Honors Program at Southern Virginia University (2021-2025), President of the Phi Kappa Phi Southern Virginia University Chapter (2018-2022), and President of the Virginia Philosophical Association (2003-2004). He currently serves as Coordinator of the Sport Performance Program (2025-present) and Treasurer of Phi Kappa Phi, Southern Virginia University Chapter (2022-present). He is an active member of the International Plato Society, Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Sigma Tau.
