John Lie is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, with his office located in Social Sciences Building, room 486. His academic career spans social theory, East Asian studies, and environmental sociology within the Department of Sociology.
Lie's research focuses on fundamental reconceptualizations of modern society, including race, ethnicity, and nationhood through works like Modern Peoplehood, while expanding into diaspora studies (Zainichi) and multiethnic societies (Multiethnic Japan). His recent trajectory shows a pronounced shift toward environmental sustainability, exemplified by Japan, the Sustainable Society and his forthcoming work on the global environmental crisis, reflecting an evolution from political economy to planetary-scale sociological inquiry.
His publications reveal consistent theoretical rigor applied across East Asian contexts, with increasing emphasis on ecological interdependence. Early works analyzed Korean and Japanese political economies, while later scholarship examines sustainability as a sociological imperative, demonstrating how social theory addresses contemporary global crises.
Lie significantly contributed to undergraduate pedagogy through the widely translated textbook Sociology: Your Compass for a New Century and served as Dean of International and Area Studies at Berkeley from 2004 to 2009, demonstrating administrative leadership alongside scholarly productivity.
