Hirofumi UTSUMI is an Associate Professor in the Department of Asian and North African Studies at Ca' Foscari University of Venice. His research focuses on Social Theory, Global Studies, and the Transnational History of Modern Japan. He holds a Ph.D. in Human Sciences from Osaka University and has taught at institutions such as Otemon Gakuin University and Kwansei Gakuin University.
UTSUMI's academic career includes roles as a Visiting Scholar at Ca' Foscari (2017–2018) and a JSPS Research Fellow (1998–2000). His work explores globalization, sociological theory, and the intersection of technology and society. He has authored/co-authored books like Globalization and Japan and contributed to journals such as Technology and Culture.
Teaching responsibilities span Japanese language courses and advanced topics in Sociology, including Contemporary East Asian Societies and Sociological Theory. UTSUMI actively engages in public lectures and NGO collaborations, such as with the Central African Republic-focused AMIS D’AFRIQUE.
