Roger Goodman is the Nissan Professor of Modern Japanese Studies at the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies, University of Oxford. His research spans the social anthropology of Japan and South Korea, with a focus on education and social welfare in East Asia. He has led projects on higher education reform in Japan and authored/co-edited works on topics like the East Asian welfare model, child protection institutions, and Japanese youth sociology.
His peer-reviewed articles examine trends in Japanese higher education, including demographic pressures, university rankings (hensachi), and post-pandemic institutional adaptation. He has also explored the status of returnee children (kikokushijo) and the political economy of healthcare in East Asia.
