John Keene is an Associate Professor of English and Chair of the Department of African American and African Studies at Rutgers University-Newark. He also teaches in the university's MFA program in Creative Writing. Born in St. Louis in 1965, Keene is a distinguished writer who received a 2018 MacArthur Fellowship, often referred to as the 'genius grant.'
Keene's research and creative interests span African American literature, experimental fiction, poetry, and literary translation. His work often explores themes of race, sexuality, and historical narrative through innovative formal approaches that challenge conventional storytelling.
His notable publications include the award-winning Counternarratives (2015), which received the American Book Award, and Annotations (1995). Keene's work demonstrates consistent engagement with both contemporary and historical literary traditions while pushing formal boundaries.
