Donika Kelly is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Iowa, specializing in creative writing and poetry. She holds an MFA from the Michener Center at the University of Texas at Austin and a PhD in English from Vanderbilt University. Her work explores themes of trauma, racial injustice, identity, and love, with a focus on transformative narratives through poetry.
Key achievements include the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for The Renunciations (2021) and the Cave Canem Poetry Prize for Bestiary (2016). Her poetry has been published in prestigious outlets like The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and The Paris Review. She is a Cave Canem graduate fellow and member of the Poets at the End of the World collective.
Donika has received major grants and fellowships, including an NEA Fellowship and a Lannan Residency Fellowship. Her academic contributions include teaching creative writing and mentoring students in literary arts. She lives in Iowa City with her wife, writer Melissa Febos.
