John Holland is a Research Fellow at the Hill & Mountain Research Centre of Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), specializing in upland ecology and land management. He previously worked at organizations like English Nature, ADAS, and the Lincolnshire and South Humberside Trust for Nature Conservation before joining SRUC in 1994. He holds a PhD from the University of Glasgow on plant-herbivore interactions in upland ecosystems.

His research interests focus on grazing impacts on vegetation, biodiversity responses to livestock decline, upland land-use scenarios for climate and biodiversity goals, sensor technology applications, and agroforestry integration. He has contributed to projects like the BBSRC ResULTS initiative and ClimateXChange's agroecological studies.
John actively collaborates on interdisciplinary projects addressing carbon sequestration, livestock system resilience, and sustainable deer management. He serves as a trustee of the Farm Woodland Forum and has presented on topics like precision ranching and climate-ready farming strategies.
His work spans advising PhD students (e.g., a 2013-2017 thesis on soil carbon cycling in Scottish uplands), guest lecturing in agriculture and environmental management courses, and managing grants from the Scottish Government and BBSRC.
