John Helton is a Senior Lecturer in The Writing Program at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), where he has taught composition with a focus on visual arguments for 18 years. He has also taught creative writing and film courses for the Honors College. His published works include memoirs such as Bad Jobs and Poor Decisions: Dispatches from the Working Class (2018) and Below the Line, which explores the film industry. Artist Robert Crumb has illustrated covers for his books, calling Helton his 'favorite contemporary American writer.'
Helton's research interests center on creative nonfiction, film analysis, and autobiographical storytelling. He has won a Pushcart Prize for his contributions to literary magazines including The Sun and The Missouri Review.
