John H. Zhang, MD, PhD is a distinguished Professor at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, holding multiple appointments including Vice Chair of Basic Sciences in the Physiology Division and Director of the Center for Neuroscience Research. His academic career spans over three decades since earning his MD from Chongqing Medical University in 1983 and PhD from the University of Alberta-Edmonton in 1992.
Dr. Zhang's research focuses on neuroscience, particularly brain injury mechanisms, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, and neuroprotection strategies. His work has significantly advanced understanding of early brain injury following hemorrhagic stroke, with particular emphasis on molecular pathways involving neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and cell death mechanisms. He has published over 1,000 articles with active research output continuing through 2025.
His laboratory investigates novel therapeutic approaches including venom preconditioning, hydrogen therapy, and various pharmacological interventions targeting specific molecular pathways. Recent work has explored mitochondrial dynamics, ferroptosis, and neurovascular protection mechanisms in both adult and neonatal brain injury models.
Dr. Zhang serves as Editor-in-Chief for multiple journals including Translational Stroke Research and Medical Gas Research, reflecting his leadership in the field. His work is primarily funded by NIH grants, with numerous active projects examining cerebral vasospasm, hemorrhage, and neuroprotective mechanisms.
He has trained numerous students and postdoctoral fellows, with evidence of supervised research work documented in his profile. His international collaborations are evident through frequent invited presentations in the United States, China, Spain, and other countries.
