Dr. John Gostage is a Lecturer in the School of Human Sciences at The University of Western Australia, where he joined as an anatomist in early 2025. He serves as Unit Coordinator for ANHB3331 and provides anatomy demonstration for courses ANHB2212, IMED1001, and OPTM4102.
Dr. Gostage's educational background includes:
- PhD in "RANKL inhibition in the amelioration of sarcopenia: potential cross-tissue effects of musculoskeletal therapies" (awarded March 27, 2024)
- MRes in Musculoskeletal Ageing (awarded September 20, 2019)
- MBiomed (Hons) in Integrated Masters in Biomedical Sciences and Anatomy (awarded July 12, 2018)
Dr. Gostage's research focuses on the intersection of bone and muscle physiology, particularly examining how bone-related signaling pathways impact skeletal muscle health. His work centers on the OPG-RANKL-RANK signaling axis and its extra-osseous roles in skeletal muscle, with implications for understanding and treating age-related muscle decline.
His research program investigates NFκB signaling in skeletal muscle, utilizing in vitro myogenesis models to explore novel therapeutics that could ameliorate muscle decline in aging and disease. This work has significant implications for understanding sarcopenia, osteosarcopenia, and the complex bone-muscle cross-talk that characterizes musculoskeletal aging.
Dr. Gostage's recent publications reveal a strong focus on translational research connecting bone biology with muscle physiology. His work demonstrates how bone-targeted therapies like denosumab may have unexpected effects on muscle function, opening new avenues for treating age-related musculoskeletal conditions.
Professional recognition includes:
- 1st prize, poster, International Sarcopenia Translational Research Conference (2021)
Dr. Gostage has secured significant research funding throughout his career, including a £120,000 scholarship from The Versus Arthritis Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) for his MRes and PhD work, a £850 CIMA upskill fund in 2020, and a £1,200 Cardiff Institute for Tissue Engineering and Repair (CITER) Summer Research Scholarship in 2018.
Prior to joining The University of Western Australia, Dr. Gostage built his research career through positions at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff University, the University of Sheffield, and the University of Galway, where he worked on novel medical devices for ambient cell transport while taking on teaching responsibilities.
