Carlos Isales

Carlos Isales is a Professor at Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia, holding joint appointments in the Department of Medicine: Endocrinology, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Department of Surgery: Trauma/Critical Care, Department of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine, and Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy. He serves as Regents' Professor and holds the J Harold Harrison MD Distinguished University Chair in Healthy Aging.

His research focuses on aging mechanisms, bone-muscle crosstalk, inflammatory regulation in musculoskeletal decline, and tryptophan/kynurenine pathway effects. He investigates hormonal signaling (glucocorticoids, androgens, AhR) and microbiome interactions in osteoporosis, Alzheimer's comorbidities, and stem cell dysfunction.

Recent publications (2024-2025) highlight his work on pharmacological AhR inhibition for bone-muscle rejuvenation, sex-specific Alzheimer's-bone pathophysiology, ACTH osteogenic potential, and IDO1-KMO metabolic axis in aging. His team explores microbiota-derived metabolites, circadian rhythm disruption, and epigenetic regulators like miRNAs and lncRNAs.
