John G. Mielke is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo, with cross-appointments in the School of Pharmacy and Department of Biology. His research examines neuronal responses to environmental factors using biochemical, electrophysiological, and behavioral approaches.
Education:
- BSc Neuroscience, University of Toronto
- BEd Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto
- PhD Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto
- Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Neurophysiology, National Research Council of Canada
Research focuses on two primary areas: 1) neurobiological embedding of adversity, investigating how factors like malnutrition and psychosocial stress affect brain development and function, and 2) biological characteristics influencing outcomes from brain injury, examining variables such as sex, age, and anatomical region. Current projects explore diet-brain interactions, stress physiology, and cognitive outcomes.
Recent publications demonstrate methodological innovations in stress biomarker measurement and examine dietary influences on neurodevelopment and cancer risk. Research integrates molecular neuroscience with population health approaches.
Professor Mielke advises graduate students in developmental origins of health and disease, molecular sociology, neuronal cell death mechanisms, and experimental neuroscience.
