John G. Cross (1938-2020) was a Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the Department of Economics within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. He earned an A.B. in Physics from Amherst College (1960) and a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University (1964). His academic career at U-M spanned 35 years, during which he advanced from Assistant Professor (1965) to Professor of Economics (1973). He also served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Nairobi (1974) under a Ford-Rockefeller Foundation initiative.
As an academic administrator, Cross held key roles: Associate Dean for Academic Appointments (1987–1991) and Associate Dean for Budget and Administration (1991–2000) at LSA, alongside his title of Senior Associate Research Scientist (1997). His research focused on microeconomic decision theory, pioneering modern bargaining process theories and integrating psychological frameworks into economic models. His seminal works include *The Economics of Bargaining* and *Theory of Adaptive Economic Behavior*.
Post-retirement (2001), he served as Vice-President for Finance at the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation (2001–2004) and later as Vice-President for Finance & Administration at Bloomfield College, New Jersey (2004–2012). Beyond academia, Cross was an avid musician, singer in the Ann Arbor Cantata Singers, and art enthusiast.
His legacy includes foundational contributions to economic theory and dedicated service to higher education. He is survived by his wife Cynthia, two children, and four grandchildren.
