Dr John Fanning is an academic with significant teaching and research roles in legal studies. He specializes in health law, mental health law and policy, and tort law. His work critically examines intersections between mental health legislation and negligence frameworks, particularly engaging with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). He currently serves as a module convenor and lecturer for courses including Law of Tort (LAW209), Mental Health Law and Policy (LAW560), and Further Tort (LAW309).
John holds degrees from the University of Liverpool and City, University of London. He is a non-practising member of Gray's Inn and contributes to academic discourse through editorships, including serving as Book Reviews Editor for Medical Law International (2012–2017). His research often explores contemporary challenges in tort law and commemorates key anniversaries in mental health legislation, such as the 40th anniversary of the Mental Health Act 1983.
His publications demonstrate a focus on legal frameworks governing psychiatric injury, disability rights, and the evolving role of medical authority in legal decision-making. He actively mentors doctoral candidates interested in mental health law or tort-related research.
