John Downey is a Professor of Comparative Media Analysis at Loughborough University (UK) since 2012. He holds visiting professorships at institutions like Williams College (USA) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China), funded by prestigious programs. His academic journey includes a PhD from Cambridge University on Frankfurt School theory, followed by a postdoc at Siegen University (Germany).
Research focuses on political communication, critical theory, and media systems comparisons, with recent emphasis on environmental communication, AI in cultural industries, and Indian media politics. He has secured major grants from the ESRC, European Commission, and British Academy, advising bodies like the BBC Trust and Electoral Commission.
Awarded the 2010 European Journal of Communication's Outstanding Article, he serves as ECREA President (2021-2024) and chairs UK's REF2029 panel.
