Liu Kang holds dual professorships as Zhiyuan Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (where he serves as Dean of the Institute of Arts and Humanities) and Professor of Chinese Media and Cultural Studies at Duke University. He concurrently directs the Duke Program of Research on China (PRC) and leads multiple research initiatives including the Shanghai-Jiaotong University-Shanghai Municipality Joint Research Center for National Image, Creativity and Innovation (RMB 15 million grant).
His education includes a BA in English from Nanjing University and MA/PhD in Comparative Literature from Madison University (likely University of Wisconsin-Madison). Research focuses on critical theory, China studies, international politics, and media narratives with a particular emphasis on global public opinion dynamics and cultural globalization.
Leadership roles include Secretary General of the Global Barometer Survey Organization and Director of the Shanghai Global Public Opinion Research Center. He has organized major media exchange programs between Europe and China since 2011, supported by the Bosch Foundation, fostering cross-cultural dialogue among leading journalists.
His work bridges academia and policy, examining how cultural narratives shape international perceptions of China. Key projects include the 'Survey of American Attitudes toward China' and comparative studies on global public opinion toward rising powers.
