Dr. John Cussans is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Worcester’s School of Arts, specializing in contemporary art, cultural history, and practice-led research. His work critically examines colonialism’s legacies in art, cinema, and popular culture through anthropological, psychological, and science fictional frameworks.

Dr. Cussans leads the Arts and Health Research Group at Worcester, collaborating with schools of Allied Health, Education, Humanities, Medicine, and Social Work. His research emphasizes the therapeutic potential of the arts and humanities, particularly in addressing mental health disparities exacerbated by the pandemic. He co-founded the Social Morphologies Research Unit (SMRU), focusing on the political and educational use of diagrams, and explores intersections of art with psychology, philosophy, and science fiction.
Future projects include seeking funding for arts-led health interventions and organizing events like the 2024 Therapeutic Landscapes: Ritual, Folklore and Wellbeing conference. His work aligns with the All Party Parliamentary Group on arts, health, and wellbeing, advocating for creative practices as public health resources.
