John Costa is a Professor (Lecturer) at the University of Utah's School of Music, where he specializes in music composition and history. He holds a DMA and MA from the University of Michigan and a BM from the University of Rhode Island. His academic trajectory includes progression from Adjunct Assistant Professor to full Professor since 2000.
His research focuses on contemporary orchestral and chamber music composition, with parallel expertise in rock and roll history. Recent works (2024) emphasize instrumental/vocal integration and live symphonic performances, reflecting sustained innovation in modern classical forms.
