John Cheng is an Associate Professor in the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at Binghamton University. His research bridges modern American history, the history of science and technology, and critical race studies. He is renowned for his book Astounding Wonder (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2012) and his contributions to the documentary series Race: The Power of an Illusion (California Newsreel, 2003).
- Education: PhD and MA from University of California; AB from Harvard College
His current projects include Unnatural Citizens, analyzing racial denaturalization in Asian American history, and Barred Zones, exploring the intersections of technology, territory, law, and race in early 20th-century nation-states. His teaching focuses on Asian American history, race and popular culture, and digital literacy.
