Professor John Burgess is an Adjunct Research Fellow at Curtin University's School of Management and Marketing (Faculty of Business and Law) and part of the Office of the Provost. His roles include supporting the HRM group, supervising PhD programs, securing external funding, and developing research programs. He chairs numerous PhD examining committees and currently co-supervises 12 PhD students and one postdoc scholar, including recipients of China Scholarship and CRC Low Carbon Living grants.
Education: PhD (Newcastle), MA (Exeter), MEc (Sydney).
Research focuses on HRM practices in multinational enterprises, contingent employment, work-life balance, cluster development, and job quality. Recent work includes studies on Saudi Arabian HRM integration, Thai higher education HRM challenges, and Singapore's host-country career barriers. Collaborations span institutions like Griffith University, University of Waikato, and National University of Ireland Galway.
Grants: Multiple Australian Research Council (ARC) grants since 2011, including projects on labour markets and workforce partnerships. Editorial roles at 5 HRM/IR journals. Consulting for NSW Government and Australian Workplace Productivity Agency.
Advancing knowledge in FIFO employment impacts, technology's role in service sector jobs, and sustainable workforce strategies. Active in global research networks and policy dialogues on precarious work and aging workforce challenges.
