John Berry is a Lecturer in the Department of Animation and Graphic Design at the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), where he has taught since 2018. He previously served as an Animation Instructor in KCAI’s Continuing Education department from 2014. Berry holds a BFA in Animation from KCAI (2012) and a Special Programs Teaching Certificate in Asian Studies. His professional experience includes roles as a freelance animator, concept artist, and art director, with collaborations on projects like the multimedia startup Strange Paper Studio. He is an award-winning animator, recognized for his short film The Reset (2011), which was featured on CinemaKC and admitted to the NYIT-NUPT Student Film Festival in China.
Research interests focus on motion, narrative, and time-based processes, with a commitment to fostering individual creativity in students. Berry’s creative work spans animation, illustration, and concept art, including projects like the Goliath Odyssey TV series concept and the Headcannon alt-rock band series. He has also contributed to fan art, including tributes to One Piece and Baidir, and maintains an active creative practice through personal and collaborative projects.
Awards and recognitions include CinemaKC’s feature for The Reset (2014) and selection for the 4th NYIT-NUPT Student Film Festival (2012). Berry’s teaching philosophy emphasizes foundational skills while encouraging independent exploration, blending traditional and digital techniques. He continues to pursue creative ventures in animation, comics, and collaborative multimedia initiatives.
