Venise Berry is a Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Iowa, part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Radio, TV, and Film from the University of Texas at Austin, with earlier degrees from the University of Iowa. Her research focuses on African American Cultural Criticism, particularly her theory of 'racialism,' examining media's impact on African American imagery and messages. Berry is also an acclaimed author of bestselling novels, including So Good and All of Me, and has co-authored works like The 50 Most Influential Black Films with her brother, S. Torriano Berry.
Berry's educational background includes a BA (1977) and MA (1979) in journalism and communication studies from the University of Iowa, followed by her Ph.D. (1989) from the University of Texas. Her professional career bridges media, academia, and creative writing, with a focus on racial representation in media and popular culture.
Her research interests span media representation, African American film and music, youth culture, and race relations. She has published extensively, including The Historical Dictionary of African American Film and co-edited Mediated Messages and African-American Culture, which won the Meyers Center Award in 1997. Berry also conducts workshops on writing popular novels and seminars on topics like racialism, wellness, and Black music as communication.
Berry has received awards such as the Creative Contribution to Literature Award (2003) and the Iowa Author Award (2001). Her interdisciplinary work bridges academia, creative writing, and public engagement, reflecting her commitment to cultural critique and empowerment.
