Michael Berry is Professor of Contemporary Chinese Cultural Studies and Director of the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), within the Department of Asian Languages & Cultures in the College of Letters and Science. Berry's research focuses on modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Chinese cinema, popular culture in modern China, and literary translation. His transnational approach addresses the richness and diversity of Chinese art and culture as it has manifested in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other Sinophone communities. His methodology combines textual analysis with extensive interviews with cultural producers.
Berry's scholarly output reveals a consistent focus on trauma, memory, and representation in Chinese cultural production. His publications span literary criticism, film studies, and cultural history, with a particular emphasis on how historical events are processed through artistic expression.
