John Bergeland is an Adjunct Professor and Thesis Advisor in the Graduate School at Bethel University, specializing in Content Area Literacy, Vocabulary Instruction, and Middle School Education. He has been affiliated with Bethel since 2005. His educational background includes a B.A. in Elementary Education and French from Concordia College (1991) and an M.Ed. in Middle School Education from Bethel University (1997).
His research focuses on disciplinary literacy, vocabulary instruction, and effective teaching practices in academic disciplines. Notable works include studies on content area vocabulary instruction and ability grouping's impact on reading achievement.
Awardees include Teacher of the Year recognition from Centennial Schools (2010-11) and a nomination as Teacher of the Year Candidate by Education Minnesota (2011-12). He teaches courses such as EDUC 665, EDUC 755, and EDU 321.
Bergeland holds certifications in Reading K-12, English/Language Arts 6-8, and Social Studies 6-8. He actively contributes to professional organizations like the International Literacy Association and ASCD.
