Dr John Akerele is a Senior Lecturer in Security and Risk Management at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. His interdisciplinary teaching bridges theoretical concepts with practical applications in security studies, emphasizing reflection, critical thinking, and unlearning through industry experience. Prior to academia, he held senior leadership roles in corporate and public security sectors, providing consultancy and training to UK and international agencies, particularly in Africa.

John’s research focuses on contemporary security phenomena, including safety and professionalism in door supervision within the night-time economy, security regulations, cybersecurity, economic crimes, and risk management. His work has expanded from improving aviation security in Africa to addressing private security sectors in the UK.
Notable awards include the Certificate of Recognition by the Association of Security Consultants and the 2024 Industrial Security Award. He supervises undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students and leads the BSc (Hons) Security and Risk Management programme.
