Johannes Wolfart is a Professor of Religion at Carleton University, cross-appointed to the Department of History. He joined Carleton in 2007 after holding positions at the University of Toronto (1994-1999) and the University of Manitoba (1999-2007), where he also served as a Senior Fellow of St. John’s College. His research focuses on Early Modern Christianity, historiography, and religion’s role in violence, with current work on 17th-century German Protestant manuscript chronicles. He served as President of the Carleton University Academic Staff Association.
Education: B.A. (Hons.), Ph.D. (Cambridge). Research interests include lesser-known Protestant varieties, confessional historiography, and religious riots. Awards include the Rh-Award for Humanities Research (Manitoba) and SSHRC grants.
Publications span topics like Lindau’s Reformation dynamics, historiographical paradigms, and urban religious identity in Early Modern Germany. His work critiques historical methodologies while exploring how religious narratives shaped political and cultural landscapes.
