Barbara Leckie is a Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Carleton University, cross-appointed with the Institute for the Comparative Study of Literature, Art, and Culture (ICSLAC). She holds a B.A. from the University of Toronto, M.A. and Ph.D. from McGill University, and a Postdoc from UC Berkeley. As Coordinator of the Environmental and Climate Humanities (EACH) Minor and Academic Director of Re.Climate (Centre for Climate Communication and Engagement), her work bridges climate change discourse with humanities scholarship. She founded the Carleton Climate Commons, emphasizing interdisciplinary climate action.
Her research focuses on the intersection of cultural forms and social change, particularly climate change rhetoric, 19th-century print culture, and procrastination’s cultural history. Recent awards include the FASS Research Achievement Award (2023-24) and SSHRC grants. She has authored books like Climate Change, Interrupted: Representation and the Remaking of Time (2022) and co-edited London Labour and London Poor (2020). Her articles explore Victorian literature, climate communication, and narrative form’s role in societal challenges.
Leckie actively collaborates across disciplines, leading presentations on climate scholarship, co-authoring works on Henry Mayhew’s legacy, and engaging in public humanities through blogs like Energy Humanities and Writers Rebel. Her academic leadership includes roles at conferences, graduate symposia, and initiatives like the NAVSA and INCS networks.
