Dr. Johannes Ullmaier is an academic lecturer and researcher at the German Institute of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, specializing in Modern German Literature. His roles include Academic Councillor (2001), Senior Academic Councillor (2008), and Academic Director (2011). He has taught numerous courses on literary theory, avant-garde movements, and narrative practices since 1993. His research focuses on simultaneity, audio literature, and time heuristics in modernism.
Education: Studied German Philology, Philosophy, and Comparative Literature at Mainz University (1987–1993), earning a Master of Arts (1993). Completed a doctorate (1998) and habilitation (2000/01). Conducted scholarly work in Zagreb (1990/91) and Vienna (2003). Served as an editor at Suhrkamp Verlag (2003/04) and held a residency with artist group monochrom (2003).
Research interests span avant-garde movements, audio literature’s role in contemporary culture, narrative theory’s temporal dimensions, and the interplay of simultaneity/synchronicity in modernist works. His publications include monographs on avant-garde aesthetics and edited volumes on figures like Dieter Roth and Ernst Jandl.
Awards include the JGU Doctoral Award (1998) and Volkswagen Foundation funding (2016/17). He has contributed to radio essays on time theory and cultural critique, blending academic rigor with public intellectual discourse.
