Johannes Schweiger

Johannes Schweiger is a Professor in the Textile Art and Design Department at the Institute of Fine Arts and Cultural Studies, University of Applied Arts Linz. His academic role began in the Winter Semester 2022. His research focuses on the intersection of textile art, design, and cultural studies, particularly exploring ornamentation in material culture and its parallels with cosmetic practices like 'Smokey Eyes' and 'Dewy Glow.' He critiques the marginalization of ornamentation in contemporary functionalist and sustainable design trends. Schweiger’s work bridges artistic, architectural, and identity-related dimensions of decorative practices.

In his inaugural lecture on May 3, 2023, he analyzed textile artworks to illustrate how ornamentation engages with concepts of identity construction and typology through material and aesthetic processes. His interdisciplinary approach links decorative techniques in art and design to broader sociocultural narratives.
