Johannah Churchill is a Lecturer in Contemporary Photography at the University of Sunderland. Her work bridges artistic practice with healthcare narratives, focusing on portraiture and documentary photography. She has exhibited at prestigious venues including the National Portrait Gallery’s 'Hold Still' exhibition and Format Festival, with her portrait "Melanie March 2020" featured in a UK-wide outdoor display and housed at the Royal London Hospital. Her academic role involves teaching on the BA (Hons) Photography, Video and Digital Imaging program.
Parallel to her photography career, Churchill works part-time as a nurse specializing in diabetes, a role that informs her photographic exploration of healthcare professionals’ experiences. Her research examines themes such as post-Brexit societal division and human connection, as seen in her MA work. She has judged competitions like the BBC and Wellcome Trust’s Photoprize and collaborates with institutions like the National Trust.
