Johanna Bond is the Sydney and Frances Lewis Professor of Law at Washington and Lee University School of Law, where she served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and contributed to multiple university committees including the Presidential Search Committee and the Provost Search Committee. She was the sole law school representative on the President’s Strategic Planning Steering Committee, chairing its Sub-committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In 2023, she was appointed Dean of Rutgers Law School, effective July 3.
Her research specializes in international human rights law and gender and the law, with scholarly work examining intersectionality in global rights frameworks. She authored two books: Global Intersectionality and Contemporary Human Rights (Oxford University Press, 2021) and Voices of African Women: Women’s Rights in Ghana, Uganda, and Tanzania (Carolina Academic Press, 2005).
Awards and honors include:
- Sydney and Frances Lewis endowed professorship (2017)
- Lewis Prize for Excellence in Legal Scholarship (2021)
- Ethan Allen Faculty Award for Scholarship (2021)
- Fulbright Scholar awards enabling research in Uganda and Tanzania (2001, 2015)
Before joining Washington and Lee in 2008, she held positions as Associate Professor at the University of Wyoming, Visiting Associate Professor at Georgetown University Law Center, and Executive Director of the Women’s Law and Public Policy Fellowship Program.
