Johanna Björkroth is a Professor of Food Hygiene and Environmental Health at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. She holds dual supervisory roles in the Doctoral Programme in Food Chain and Health and the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Veterinary Medicine. Her research focuses on cold-tolerant bacteria in food spoilage, microbial ecology, and food safety. She has held leadership roles including Vice-Rector for Research (2008-2013) and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (2004-2007).

Research Interests: Her work addresses psychrotrophic bacteria's role in food spoilage, microbial contamination pathways, and genomic/metagenomic analyses of spoilage communities. Key themes include cold-tolerant LAB and Enterobacteriaceae, metabolic pathways, and food processing safety.

Grants & Leadership: Leads projects funded by the Academy of Finland and Novo Nordisk Foundation. Active in academic governance, including board roles at the Academy of Finland and Finland's Food Safety Authority (Ruokavirasto).
Labs/Teams: Core member of Helsinki One Health (HOH) and the Food Spoilage Microbiomes research group, focusing on interdisciplinary approaches to food safety challenges.
