Rauni Kivistö is a University Lecturer and Docent (Adjunct Professor) at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Food Hygiene and Environmental Health. She supervises the Doctoral Programme in Food Chain and Health and leads the Veterinary Environmental Hygiene Research Group under Helsinki One Health (HOH), focusing on zoonotic pathogens and environmental health interventions.
Her research centers on Campylobacter and Cryptosporidium as food/waterborne pathogens, investigating taxonomy, genomic epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, and virulence. She also examines environmental health factors including drinking water quality, recreational water safety, air quality, and waste management to prevent disease transmission through healthy environments.
Recent 2025 publications analyze Campylobacter survival in beef liver, molecular detection in pastures, and fecal contamination in Helsinki bathing waters, demonstrating her integration of genomic tools with environmental monitoring for food safety and public health.
Dr. Kivistö has received:
- Scientific Article of the Year 2021 (awarded November 15, 2022)
She supervises doctoral/licentiate students including Anniina Lehmus and Aava Marte, and leads key projects:
- WE 2025/Kivistö: Protective gas effects on Campylobacter survival (2025-2029, Walter Ehrström Foundation)
- MMM Lammaslaidun: Sheep pasture zoonoses (2022-2025, Ministry of Agriculture)
- Antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter in Finnish broilers (ongoing, Finnish Veterinary Foundation)
Her HOH research group collaborates on pathogen detection in food/environmental systems, emphasizing public health applications.
