Johann Stief

Prof. Johann Stief is a design academic affiliated with the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle since 1994, holding the rank of Professor within the Design Faculty. Born in Bavaria in 1956, he studied Interior Design at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München (1978–1983 and 1988–1993) and Architecture at the Technische Universität München (1982–1988). He founded an interior design firm in 1986 and has also taught at universities in St. Petersburg, Russia, since 2003. Though retired from active university service in 2022, he remains active in academic and artistic activities.

His professional interests span design strategies, material innovation, and interdisciplinary collaborations, reflected in his involvement with exhibitions such as ZUKÜNFTE – Material und Design von Morgen and WEAR WE MEET. He frequently organizes events like the BURG Session and participates in academic governance through roles like the Akademischer Senat. His work intersects with textile arts, performance, and the intersection of design with historical contexts, as seen in exhibitions like Formen der Anpassung at the GRASSI Museum.

Prof. Stief’s current activities include overseeing student showcases like the Jahresausstellung 2025 and promoting design education through events such as the Burg Summer School. His professional network extends to international collaborations, including partnerships with institutions in Leipzig and Prague. Despite retirement, he continues to engage with academic communities through exhibitions, lectures, and public events.
